A 10-year-old boy from Macclesfield has completed an ambitious fitness challenge, raising more than £2,500 for international aid and development charity Tearfund.

Judah Peake set himself the task of completing 1,000 press-ups throughout August to raise money for people affected by disaster, conflict and extreme poverty.

His determination saw him keep going wherever he was — including during a family hike to the summit of Snowdon, where he managed to fit in some of his press-ups along the way.

The idea for the fundraiser came during the summer holidays when Judah and his family were attending a Christian festival. They began talking about how they could support people around the world facing difficult circumstances, including those affected by the situation in Venezuela.

Judah decided that he wanted to do something practical to help and chose Tearfund as the charity he would support.

Judah said: “I chose Tearfund because they are helping people in countries with disasters, conflict and extreme poverty. Our church also works with them and I also wanted to help. I chose to do 1000 push ups because it sounded really really hard, I couldn’t really do them at first but each day as I did more it got slightly easier.
“My football coach also wanted me to get fitter so I thought I could do both at the same time. By the end I felt a real sense of achievement and it was a good challenge to set myself.”

Judah and his family attend Holy Trinity Church in Hurdsfield, and his fundraising effort quickly became a family affair, with cousins joining in and encouraging him throughout the challenge.

His dad, Robin, 40, said the family wanted to help their children understand the different circumstances people around the world face.

“We want to teach the children that not everyone is born with the same privilege and ensure they have an awareness of those in the world who need help. We said to Judah if he hit his target of £1000 pounds then we would double it, he has done absolutely amazing.”

Judah's efforts have also been praised by Tearfund, with the charity highlighting the commitment he showed throughout the summer.

Stuart Lee, Tearfund’s Fundraising and Communications Director, said:

“What Judah has achieved over the summer is incredible, it shows such commitment and grit. It is so great to see young people who are passionate about fundraising and also thinking about those people in the world who have less than themselves. I can’t wait to see what challenge Judah takes on next!”

Anyone who would like to support Judah’s fundraising can donate through his JustGiving page.
