The The Salvation Army has launched a coffee van with a difference — serving drinks, conversation and support to students across the North West.

Nicknamed the “Brew Van”, the mobile coffee shop will visit universities and student events across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria.

The aim is simple: meet young people where they already gather — over a coffee.

Run by The Salvation Army’s youth team, the van will appear at freshers’ fairs, student events and community gatherings, offering hot drinks and a friendly place to talk.

Youth specialist Darren Highton said the idea is about connecting with young people in a relaxed environment.

“Students love meeting up over a coffee, so we decided to take that idea on the road,” he said. “The Brew Van creates a space where people can chat, feel welcome and find support if they need it.”

Alongside serving drinks, the van will also include a chaplain offering pastoral support, helping students who might need someone to talk to or guidance towards further help.

Coffee With a Purpose

All drinks and snacks sold from the van are fair trade and ethically sourced, including coffee beans, tea and biscuits.

Money raised from sales will go directly back into The Salvation Army’s youth and children’s work across the North West.

The van itself has also had a second life.

Originally used as an emergency response vehicle in Scotland, it was saved from being scrapped and transformed into the Brew Van now serving student communities.

The eco-friendly vehicle runs on lithium batteries that provide up to nine hours of power, making it both mobile and energy efficient.

And with coffee, conversation and community all on the menu, the Brew Van is set to become a familiar sight on campuses across the region.
