Chester Choir Marks 25 Years with Surprise Songs for Local Heroes

By Community Correspondent
Passers-by across Chester were treated to unexpected bursts of harmony last month as A Handbag of Harmonies, the city’s bold and brilliant all-female choir, took their music to the streets in celebration of their 25th anniversary.
To mark the milestone, the choir surprised six local residents with special "Choirgrams" – doorstep performances delivered to people nominated by friends and family for their kindness, resilience, or simply for deserving a moment of joy.
From a much-loved dance teacher to a courageous young boy and a couple who’ve dedicated decades to community service, each recipient was celebrated in song by the choir, led by long-time Musical Director Matt Baker.
“It was a day full of emotion, we wanted to give something back to the people who make this community what it is – to recognise the quiet heroes who often go unnoticed.” said a spokesperson for the event.
The performances, kept secret until the very last moment, were met with hugs, tears, and plenty of smiles – as well as flowers, confetti, and a little bit of sparkle.

The day ended with a celebratory ride on the Grosvenor Park Big Wheel, with the choir singing high above the city that’s supported them for a quarter of a century.
Formed in Chester in 1999, A Handbag of Harmonies has built a reputation for its vibrant performances and tight-knit community spirit.
The anniversary event was a fitting tribute to the group’s roots and its ongoing connection to the people of Chester.
“It was one of those days that reminds you just how powerful music can be, not just for those listening – but for those singing too.”
