Clevedon sixth form students have been crowned regional champions after winning the South West debating competition organised by the European Youth Parliament
The Year 12 team from Clevedon School in Somerset impressed judges throughout an exhilarating day of debates, tackling complex international issues ranging from artificial intelligence to European security.
After several rounds of discussion and argument, the Clevedon students were announced as overall winners of the South West Regional Debating Competition, securing their place in the national final later this year.
The winning team — Eve, Olivia, Ava, Adam, Max, Joe, Harry and James — were praised for their research, teamwork and ability to respond quickly to challenging arguments during fast-moving debates.
Judges highlighted the students’ critical thinking and flexibility, with the team confidently navigating discussions as the debates evolved and new perspectives were introduced.
Among the standout topics was how Europe can adopt artificial intelligence responsibly.
Students also explored how European countries can strengthen collective defence, weighing ethical, political and technological considerations while presenting persuasive arguments.
Mark Cullen, Politics Curriculum Leader at Clevedon School, said the judges had been deeply impressed by the team’s performances.
“Our students were remarkable and some of their debating was of the highest quality, with the judges giving incredible feedback,” he said.
“Communication skills are vital in the modern world and all of the students will thrive in whatever careers they choose to go into.”
