Doctor, Musician, Brain Expert: How Dr Andrew Curran Is Using Science and Song to Help People Heal and Live Joyfully

By Health and Music Correspondents
After four decades as a paediatric neurologist and expert in brain development, Dr Andrew Curran is embarking on a bold new mission—to help people unlock joy, healing, and emotional freedom through a powerful fusion of neuroscience and live music.
Now 67 and based in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, Dr Curran is combining his deep understanding of the brain with his lifelong passion for songwriting and storytelling.
The result is a series of immersive, two-hour events that use both science and song to bring emotional transformation to life.
Backed by years on the medical frontlines and renowned for his work with the national education organisation Independent Thinking—where he trained thousands of headteachers—Dr Curran is now focusing on a broader challenge: helping adults overcome the emotional baggage and limiting beliefs that hold them back.
“Your brain is not broken. You are not stuck. You are far more capable of healing and change than you think,” says Dr Curran.
“And sometimes, the most powerful way to access that healing isn’t just through information. It’s through rhythm, music, movement—through joy.”
His new live tour with his band The Promise is designed to stir the mind and move the soul.

Each event blends accessible teaching on how the brain works—especially around trauma, attachment, and emotional regulation—with live, original music that gives voice to those truths.
“Science tells us that music activates multiple areas of the brain at once,” he explains.
“It’s healing. It’s bonding. It’s emotional. It’s transformative. I don’t just want people to understand what’s possible—I want them to feel it.”
Dr Curran’s best-selling The Little Book of Big Stuff About the Brain, now in its sixth reprint, has already helped thousands of teachers and parents create better environments for young people to learn and grow.
But now, retired from clinical medicine, his focus has widened.
His message is simple: the brain is brilliantly designed to heal, grow, and change—at any age.
“You don’t have to carry the past into your future,” says Dr Curran.
“Your early experiences may have shaped you, but they don’t have to define you. You were made to live fully, fearlessly, and freely. You have the right to be joyful.”
With live tour dates rolling out across the UK, an upcoming album, and a growing online following, Dr Curran’s mission is gaining momentum.
Part concert, part brain masterclass, part emotional awakening, his events are a unique invitation to change—not just what you think, but how you feel.
