It’s not every day a rhino is first in line for a scrub-up when a community kicks off a town wide clean up.

But Dumfries in south-west Scotland started a week-long community clean initiative in style thanks to local experts Eco Dry Ice.

The town’s famous rhino statue – also complete with baby rhino - was first in line for a makeover as part of a Dumfries Shine initiative, organised by the town’s board.

Such is the cleaning expertise of Eco Dry Ice they are well used to being called to a wide range of diverse assignments all over the UK, from huge modern factories to priceless vintage aircraft and cars.

But a rhino was even a first for them.

Head of Dry Ice Steven McCreadie and colleague Gordon Keenan, based at Eco’s HQ at nearby Annan, carried out an assessment and decided the rhinos were ideal candidates for a dry ice clean.

Steven said: “We think the Dumfries Shine initiative is a brilliant idea - what a great way to involve organisations, community groups, businesses and schools and do something really positive, giving back and taking pride in the town.
“We were only too pleased to get involved and provide our services free of charge to back the initiative. What a perfect way to start by cleaning up these iconic rhinos. It’s certainly a first for us!”

Jo Johnstone, Dumfries Town Board Programme Manager, explained that the Dumfries Shine initiative was born from the formation of the town board to kick off community improvements ahead of £20m of funding being available over the next 10 years.

Jo said: “Thanks to Eco Dry Ice for getting us off to a great start. The rhinos are so well-loved by the community ever since the 1980s when local schoolchildren came up with the idea of having a rhino on top of a bus stop!
“After the bus stop needed to be removed for roadworks a few years later, the rhino was reinstalled – and a baby rhino appeared then too!
“Seeing them cleaned up like this is a fantastic way to put Dumfries Shine on everyone’s radar and we are looking forward to a great week of events.”

Dumfries Shine’s week-long community clean-up activities, from Monday (September 1) to Saturday (September 6), will culminate in a thank-you party for those who took part on Saturday 10am-5pm with live music in the town centre.

Eco Dry Ice is part of multi award-winning Eco Group, a fully qualified and SQA accredited company offering the highest level of dry ice cleaning service.
