Teachers are being invited to swap their projectors and paint pots for a day out at the world’s oldest scientific zoo this autumn, as London Zoo offers the nation’s educators free entry for World Teacher Day.

The world-famous Zoo, run by the global conservation charity ZSL, is opening its doors to teachers on Sunday, 5 October, offering them a much-needed time out surrounded by nature and wildlife, and showcasing all that the Zoo has to offer to them and their students.

In recognition of the power that nature has to heal, to calm, to inspire, it is ZSL’s belief that every child should have access to nature at school.

The charity is calling for the government to make this a statutory right, and teachers enjoying their free day out at London Zoo will be able to see for themselves how learning in nature boosts physical and mental wellbeing, learn how it can increase attendance and inspire the conservationists of tomorrow.

Nestled in the heart of England’s capital - a city where more than half of the boroughs have higher levels of poverty than England as a whole, which often equates to less access to nature - London Zoo is a gateway for so many young people.

Addressing this inequality nationwide is crucial, and ZSL’s campaign is calling for access to nature to be recognised as a right for every school child.

During their free visit, teachers will explore the Zoo’s incredible diversity of species and habitats in the heart of the UK’s capital.

From towering giraffes and striking zebras in Into Africa, to colourful corals and curious invertebrates in Tiny Giants, every corner offers discovery. Teachers can see endangered species in habitats like The Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians and gain fresh insights into how to inspire their students to protect these species.

Ahead of its official opening, teachers can also enjoy an exclusive preview tour of ZooTown, London Zoo’s brand-new immersive role-play experience, where children can imagine their future as vets, scientists, horticulturalists or field conservationists and more.

ZSL believes that every child should have the right to access nature at school.

The charity’s Access to Nature campaign advocates for outdoor learning to become an integral part of teachers', parents', guardians', and anyone with fond memories of growing up, as well as every child’s education.

This includes funding for wellies and waterproofs, teacher training, and access to wild spaces in every school. For more details, visit www.zsl.org/NatureAccess.
