From Eastleigh to Paralympic Glory: David Smith’s Inspiring Journey in Boccia
David Smith

David lives in Swansea with his partner, Claire. He was born and raised in Eastleigh before moving to Swansea to attend university.

A lifelong aviation enthusiast, he studied Aerospace Engineering, reflecting his deep passion for the subject.

David has severe cerebral palsy and uses an electric wheelchair for mobility. Despite his condition, he has good hand control, allowing him to carry out some tasks independently, supported by live-in carers for his daily needs.

David’s journey with Boccia began in primary school in Southampton, though his early attempts were challenging and lacked precision.

It wasn’t until moving to Treloar for secondary school that he had the opportunity to develop his skills and compete regularly.

Among David’s proudest accomplishments are becoming the youngest-ever British Boccia champion at the age of 14 and achieving the distinction of being the most successful British Boccia athlete, with five Paralympic medals—three of them gold.

David believes strongly that everyone should have access to social and recreational activities, particularly during childhood.

His outlook on life is one of positivity and purpose—life is short, and it is meant to be lived to the fullest.
