From medicine in Bulgaria to a passion for the heart

Nabeela Hazim thought she knew where her future was heading.
The 21-year-old from Qatar had planned to study medicine in Bulgaria. Then, almost by chance, she spotted an advert for Medical Physiology at the University of Leicester during Clearing.
She had never heard of the subject before, but decided to find out more. One conversation later, her plans had changed – and so had the direction of her career.
“I read more about it and found the content really interesting,” said Nabeela. “It seemed like a great fit for my interests, so I decided to apply through Clearing.”
What began as a change of plan has since developed into a genuine passion. Nabeela has now graduated from the course and is hoping to build a career in Cardiac Physiology.
“I've really enjoyed it and although my original plan changed, I've discovered a genuine interest in physiology,” she said.
“The course has been fascinating and studying how the human body functions in such depth has confirmed my passion for it. Looking back, I'm really glad I chose Medical Physiology.”
For Nabeela, it wasn't just the course that made the experience a success.
Moving from Qatar to Leicester was a big step, but she quickly found a welcoming and diverse community.
“Moving from Qatar was a big change, but Leicester is such a diverse and welcoming city that settling in was much easier than I expected,” she said.
“I've met people from lots of different backgrounds, and the inclusive environment has made my university experience really enjoyable.”
She also remembers her first experience of Clearing fondly, describing the process as straightforward and reassuring.
“The call handler I spoke to was friendly and supportive, explained each step clearly, and made me feel at ease throughout the call,” she said.
“They answered all my questions and made the whole experience much less stressful than I expected.”

What started with an unexpected advert has ultimately given Nabeela a new direction – and a place she now considers home.
“Going through Clearing turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made,” she said. “I found a course I genuinely enjoy, developed a passion for physiology, and became part of a university and city where I've felt supported throughout my time here.”
