Hepworth House Celebrates Resident David Watson’s Inspiring 95th Birthday
By Community Correspondent
Residents and staff at HC-One’s Hepworth House Care Home in Stanley, Wakefield, are celebrating the remarkable life of David Watson, who turns 95 this December.
David’s story is one of service, adventure, and passion — a shining example of living life to the fullest.
Even in his mid-90s, he credits his longevity to staying active and maintaining a positive outlook on life.
A lifelong football enthusiast, David has combined his love of the sport with his talent for writing. He is the author of two well-known books on footballer biographies — Oakwell Centurions, published when he turned 60, and Millmoor Personalities, which followed later. Both titles were successful, selling thousands of copies and earning praise from fans of the game.
His passion for football began at just 13 years old, when a family friend took him to see Rotherham United at their Millmoor ground. From that moment, David became a proud supporter of the team, while also enjoying matches in his hometown of Barnsley.
At 18, David was called up to serve in the Royal Air Force as a pay clerk. His service was extended during the outbreak of the Korean War — a period he recalls with fondness. After leaving the RAF, he joined Barnsley County Borough Police in 1951, where he dedicated 33 years to public service. Rising through the ranks from Constable to Superintendent, David served across several regions, earning respect from colleagues and the communities he protected.
Family has always been at the heart of David’s life. He married his beloved wife, Irene, in 1954 after a charming courtship that began at a bus stop in Barnsley.
Their marriage lasted 66 years, and together they raised two sons, Robert and Chris, building a warm and loving family home.
After retiring, David and Irene enjoyed travelling across the UK in their touring caravan, exploring England, Scotland, and Wales.
Reflecting on his many experiences, David says he is most proud of his family, his service in the RAF and police, and his contribution to football history through his writing.
Now a cherished member of the Hepworth House community, David continues to share his stories, humour, and wisdom with fellow residents and staff.
Ellie Linskill, Activities Coordinator at HC-One’s Hepworth House Care Home, said:
“Hearing David’s life story is truly inspiring. From his dedication to service, love of family, and passion for football, he exemplifies resilience, curiosity, and the joy of staying active. We are delighted to celebrate his 95th birthday with him this December.”
As David marks this special milestone, the Hepworth House community is looking forward to celebrating with him — honouring not just his birthday, but a lifetime of achievement and joy.
