A Scarborough Salvation Army project teaching cooking and budgeting skills has transformed lives, with 150 people completing the free six-week Victory Programme.

Led by Lindsey Barker, the courses—one on batch cooking and one on baking—are inspired by Second World War resourcefulness and show participants how to cook meals for under £1 a portion while building confidence.

Running for four years at the church on Alma Parade, the programme also helps people make friends and combat isolation.

Stephen, 65, joined after a traumatic medical episode and said attending was “the best thing I ever did,” crediting the course with rebuilding his confidence and improving his mental health. “It helped save my life,” he said.

Participants begin with the six-week cooking course and can progress to a baking course. Each cohort has around six people, with sessions held several times a year.

Dishes include hotpots, curries, casseroles, and BBQ chicken, each serving four for around £1 per portion.

Lindsey said the programme teaches practical skills and helps socially isolated people blossom.

Many now attend coffee mornings, worship services, or volunteer with the church.

Jayne, 65, said she regained confidence and enthusiasm for cooking, while Louise, 57, who lives with dementia, said the group helped her meet kind, supportive people and learn healthier, cheaper ways to eat.

Peter, 35, first joined three years ago when struggling with confidence and now returns to help newcomers. “You’re having a laugh with other people while cooking. It’s helped me know I can make meals that last for days on a budget,” he said.
