Lottery Cash Boost for Age Concern Hampshire’s Five-Year Plan to Help Older People Thrive
By Community Correspondent
Age Concern Hampshire has kicked off an ambitious five-year mission to help older people stay active, social and full of confidence — thanks to a major boost from The National Lottery Community Fund.
The new project, called Living Well in Later Life, will deliver free exercise and wellbeing sessions across Hampshire.
Activities will take place in Care & Wellbeing Centres and community venues, offering a warm and welcoming space for older residents who may feel isolated or unsure about joining mainstream classes.
From gentle strength and balance sessions to confidence-building activities, the focus is simple: help people move more, feel better and make new friends along the way.
Organisers say the programme has been shaped by what older people themselves say they want — more connection, more support and more chances to stay independent.
The targets are ambitious. The charity hopes:
- 70% of participants will become more physically active
- 65% will improve their strength, balance or mobility
- 75% will feel less isolated and better in themselves
- 80% will feel more connected to their local community
But it’s not just about exercise. The scheme will also invest in specialist training for staff and volunteers, making sure activities are safe, inclusive and designed specifically for older adults.
The aim is to place prevention and wellbeing at the heart of services for years to come.
Volunteers are now being sought in Basingstoke and Southampton. No fitness background is required — just a friendly face and a willingness to help others feel welcome. Full training and support will be provided.
As well as improving physical and mental wellbeing, the programme encourages older people to think about healthy ageing in a wider sense, including staying connected to their communities and caring for the environment around them.
