Mental Health on the Job Site: Why We Started Building Minds

By: Josh & Jake Caulfield, Co-Founders of Evolution Developments
It’s easy to focus on what’s being built — the concrete, the steel, the finished product. But behind every project are the people making it happen.
The lads on the tools.
The apprentices learning the ropes. The teams working hard day in, day out across muddy sites and long hours. Because when we talk about what makes a job site strong, it’s not just about bricks and mortar — it’s about minds.
We started Evolution Developments with a vision: to build things the right way, with craftsmanship, care, and community at the core.
We are a top -rated construction company, known for everything from bespoke new builds to garage conversions.
But as we built homes and grew our team, we saw something else that needed urgent attention — the mental health of our workforce.
Construction is one of the highest-pressure industries in the UK.
The hours are long, the environment is demanding, and the “toughen up” culture still lingers. Too many good people are struggling in silence.
We knew we had to do something. So we launched Building Minds — our way of giving something back to the industry that’s given us so much.
Building Minds: More Than a Blog
Building Minds started as a simple idea: make mental fitness part of the everyday conversation in construction.
Bot something to be ashamed of, not something you deal with only when things hit rock bottom — but part of how we support each other on and off the tools.
It’s about real talk. Honest experiences. And making it okay to say, “I’m not doing great today.”
Mental Health Week was a reminder that everyone deserves support — whether you're just starting your apprenticeship or managing a full crew.
We’ve seen first-hand how one open conversation can shift an entire site’s atmosphere. That’s the kind of change we’re here for.
To Young Builders: You're Allowed to Struggle
If you’re new to the trade, you might feel pressure to keep quiet, push through, and earn your place. But being tough doesn’t mean doing it all alone.
The strongest tradies we know are the ones who check in on their mates, ask for help when they need it, and back others to do the same.
To Site Leaders: Set the Tone
Culture starts from the top.
As business owners, foremen, and experienced tradies, we set the example. Ask how your team’s doing — not just whether the plastering’s done. Share your own challenges. Make time for conversations that go beyond the work. That’s leadership.
Why This Matters
Winning the Vodafone Business Gain Line Award meant a lot to us — not just because it recognises Evolution Developments, but because it proves that what we’re doing with Building Minds matters.
It’s validation that combining business with purpose isn't just possible — it's powerful. We’re not just here to build structures. We’re here to build a better industry. One that looks after its own.
So whenever you get a chance, take five. For your mate. For your apprentice. For yourself. Because when we build with care, we build something that lasts.
