New singing group brings music, memories and connection to people living with dementia

A new monthly singing group for people living with dementia and their carers has launched in Weston-super-Mare, creating a welcoming space to enjoy music, make connections and share memories.

The Salvation Army’s Singing by Heart programme began on Friday, 11 September, at its Carlton Street building. The free, relaxed sessions run from 10.30am to midday, with plenty of time for refreshments and a chat.

The group will meet on the second Friday of each month, with upcoming sessions on 9 October, 13 November and 11 December.

No booking is needed — people can simply turn up. Carers are warmly welcomed and are essential where health needs require their support.

The sessions feature a mixture of familiar popular songs and classic hymns from across the decades.

Music can be particularly meaningful for people living with dementia, helping to unlock memories, encourage communication and create positive emotions.

Major Christa Beeldman, who leads The Salvation Army in Weston-super-Mare, said the group is about much more than singing.

“We have seen the power of this programme across the territory, and we are so pleased to bring it here,” she said. “It is not just about the singing; it is about creating a supportive network for people living with dementia and their carers.”

She added: “Importantly, singing really helps to make both a spiritual and mind connection, and people really enjoy their time together.”
