Pupils Go Full STEAM Ahead for British Science Week!
By Schools Correspondent
Mary Elton Primary School pupils in Clevedon, Somerset, had a fantastic time celebrating British Science Week across the school, with curiosity and questions taking centre stage!
Throughout the week, pupils across the school explored a wide range of investigations and hands‑on challenges.

In KS1, they experimented with floating and sinking to design effective boats, tested magnetic materials, constructed long and strong bridges, compared different pegs, explored how to make vehicles travel faster and further and even dismantled objects on the tinker table to find out what’s inside.
Some classes spent time looking closely at the natural world, creating ecosystem webs and exploring how birds build nests. They even had a go at making their own nests using pegs as beaks!
Pupils also developed short presentations to demonstrate natural processes such as pollination and fertilisation.

Elsewhere, pupils took part in a collaborative paper helicopter challenge, testing a basic design before adapting and improving it through lots of trial and error, problem‑solving and discussion.

Some pupils also joined a live, online Picture News session exploring the mysteries of the ocean depths and considering the big question: “What lies beneath?”
