Bats are essential to the health of our planet, and humans rely on them more than many people realise.

One of the most important roles bats play is pest control. By eating thousands of insects each year, bats help to protect crops and reduce the need for chemical pesticides. This saves agriculture billions of pounds worldwide and supports more sustainable farming.

Bats also play a crucial role in pollination.

Tropical fruit bats are responsible for pollinating hundreds of plant species across the world, including bananas, agave and cacao. These plants are vital for human food supplies and important industries such as chocolate production.

In addition, fruit-eating bats are key to seed dispersal. By spreading seeds across rainforests, they help damaged ecosystems to regrow and regenerate. Many seeds are dispersed through bat droppings, which act as a natural fertiliser and help plants to germinate more effectively.

Are bats endangered?

Yes. Many bat species are endangered or at high risk of extinction, both globally and in countries such as the UK. While the situation varies depending on species and location, bat populations are declining due to habitat loss, pesticide use, disease and climate change.

Bats are a key part of healthy ecosystems, and their loss would have serious consequences for biodiversity and the natural balance that supports life.

By becoming more bat-friendly and learning how we can protect them, we can help ensure bats continue to thrive — benefiting nature and people alike.
