A Ukrainian refugee who fled the war has found a new purpose in Sunderland, helping others through her new role at The Salvation Army.

Olena Myronova, who arrived in the UK with her husband and daughter, now works as a Refugee Support Co-ordinator and Translator at Monkwearmouth Salvation Army, having been supported into the role by the charity’s Employment Plus service.

As part of her job, Olena supports fellow Ukrainians with housing, job searches, school and visa applications, and emotional support.

“I just want to be useful to the Ukrainian community and to The Salvation Army, which has been a friendly and safe space for us,” she said.

The church has been a lifeline for many Ukrainian families, offering social events, bilingual worship, and access to volunteering and job opportunities. Olena, who previously worked in local government in Ukraine, began volunteering and studying English before applying for her current paid role.

She credits Sue Parks from Employment Plus for helping her with her CV, interview preparation and navigating UK systems.

“Without Sue, I would have struggled,” Olena said.

Church leaders say Olena has made a big impact. Major David McCaw-Aldworth said:

“She’s already made a huge difference, helping people get into work and school. Her knowledge and connection to the community are invaluable.”

The story is being shared as part of Refugee Week, highlighting the contributions of refugees across the UK.
