University of Warwick and Aston Villa Announce Landmark Partnership to Launch Sports Leadership Degrees
By Sports Correspondent
Two of the Midlands’ most recognisable institutions – the University of Warwick and Aston Villa Football Club – have unveiled a major new partnership bringing together leading education, elite sport and advanced research.
The collaboration is designed to reshape how universities and professional sports organisations work together, combining academic expertise and industry insight to support the growing professionalisation of the global sports sector.
At the heart of the agreement is the development of a distinctive MBA and MSc in Management programme focused on sport.
These postgraduate courses will support individuals looking to enter the sports industry or advance their careers across the wider sports ecosystem and supply chain.

Professor Andy Lockett, Dean of Warwick Business School at the University of Warwick, said the partnership brings together two globally recognised Midlands institutions.
“The University of Warwick and Aston Villa are both internationally respected for excellence in their fields. By working together we can combine Warwick’s strength in research and teaching with Aston Villa’s sporting expertise to create new opportunities for students, athletes and the wider community.
“Our goal is to help transform a passion for sport into meaningful career opportunities. Warwick Business School will introduce new MBA and MSc pathways focused on Elite Sports Leadership and Management.”
Francesco Calvo, President of Business Operations at Aston Villa FC, said the collaboration reflects the club’s commitment to innovation and community impact.
“Aston Villa has always been more than just a football club. We are deeply connected to our community and committed to making a positive impact at every level.
“This partnership with the University of Warwick highlights our ambition to create new opportunities and help shape the future of the sports industry – from operations and analytics to technology, leadership and athlete development. By combining football and education, we aim to inspire and develop the next generation of leaders in sport.”
As part of the initiative, Warwick Business School’s MBA programme will introduce a new Sports Leadership pathway, featuring specialist modules that draw on insights from the global sports industry to help develop future business leaders.
Both organisations will work closely in the coming months to develop the academic structure of the programmes, expand research collaboration and create student opportunities.
The partnership will also support community initiatives and strengthen the Midlands’ reputation as a global hub for sport, education and innovation.
