Why Woburn’s New Otter Pups are Stealing Hearts and Why Their Story Matters
By Animals Correspondent
This Easter, there’s a brand-new reason to head to Woburn Safari Park – and they’re small, fluffy, and already stealing hearts.
Two tiny Asian short-clawed otter pups, born on 28th January 2026, have made their debut at Otter Falls, and they’re already causing a splash with visitors.

While cute otter videos rack up millions of views online, experts warn there’s a more serious story behind the scenes. These new arrivals highlight the vital conservation work being done to protect a species facing real threats in the wild.
Behind the cuteness, keepers are hard at work. The pups have undergone important health checks and microchipping to monitor their wellbeing – revealing one boy and one girl.
These checks are a key part of conservation care, helping ensure the future of the species.

Their birth is also a big win for the European Endangered Species Programme, which works to maintain a healthy and sustainable population of Asian short-clawed otters.
In the wild, these animals face shrinking habitats and the dangers of illegal wildlife trade – issues sometimes worsened by the demand for viral “cute” content.
“People often see otters dressed up as pets on social media without realising the pressures the species faces in the wild,” said Rebecca Foskett, Deputy Head of Animal Encounters.
“These births are incredibly important as part of the conservation breeding programme. Every successful birth helps support a healthy population in zoos while raising awareness about protecting the species in the wild.”
And it’s not just mum doing the work.
These social animals are all about family – with dad Kovu stepping up by bringing food back to the nest, while older sibling Thiên thần keeps a close eye on the new arrivals, learning the ropes for the future.

Visitors can catch the adorable duo in action this Easter, hear from keepers, and discover how Woburn Safari Park is helping to protect this vulnerable species – all while enjoying one of the cutest sights of the season.
