The King Alfred School Academy marked World Book Day with costumes, decorated doors, and a shared love of reading.

World Book Day, which was on 5th March, is a global event dedicated to celebrating authors, illustrators and the joy that books bring.

Its purpose is to encourage children and young people to read for pleasure and to help them build a lifelong reading habit.

TKASA’s corridors were filled with characters from across literature and beyond. Students and staff arrived dressed as everything from wizards and woodland creatures to mathematical concepts.

Among the most memorable costumes were Harry Potter, Gandalf, the Lorax, an elf, Pythagoras’ Theorem and Handmaids. The variety of outfits showed just how wide and wonderful the world of reading can be!

The creativity continued in the classrooms, where staff and students decorated their doors to represent well‑known books.

Walking through the school felt like stepping into a library brought to life.

Learning Support transformed their door into a tribute to Wicked, Miss Wildgoose celebrated Heartstopper, and Mrs Gilbert-Muir brough Medusa to the corridor.

Throughout the day, students took part in a range of activities designed to spark curiosity and excitement about reading. Many enjoyed book‑themed challenges and treasure hunts, while others looked forward to receiving their World Book Day tokens, giving them the chance to choose a new book to enjoy.

As one student reflected, World Book Day means something different to everyone, but its main purpose is to help people discover a love of reading that can last a lifetime.
