Banwell Primary School turned up the volume this week, as it hosted its annual Musician of the Year Award winner’s ceremony — and this year’s event was extra special, marking an incredible 30 years of musical talent.

The prestigious competition saw pupils from across the school step into the spotlight, all hoping to take home one of the coveted titles.

Categories included Musician of the Year for both KS1 (ages 4–7) and KS2 (ages 7–11), alongside awards for Most Original Act, Wowed the Judges and Highly Commended.

After a series of competitive heats, the finalists delivered unforgettable performances packed with confidence, creativity and passion.

From a solo drummer who brought the rhythm, to powerful solo singers, a dazzling song-and-dance duo, an electric guitarist performing a cappella, and a talented pianist — the audience was treated to a spectacular showcase.

Despite some pre-show nerves, every performer rose to the occasion in front of the whole school, plus a proud crowd of friends and family. Each act left the stage to huge applause, having done themselves and their school proud.

The show was led and curated by Head of School Kate Evans and music lead and Year 1/2 teacher Sarah Dockerty, who helped bring the event to life.

Sarah Dockerty said:

“Musician of the Year is a highlight in the Banwell calendar. Each and every year the talent gets stronger and the confidence that pupils demonstrate is absolutely phenomenal. We are so proud of each and every one of our musicians in our Banwell family and I am already excited to see the talent that 2027 will bring!”

The excitement didn’t stop there, with pupils already looking ahead to next year’s competition.

One budding musician said:

“That was so much fun. I love playing the piano and I already know what I would like to play next year. I will start practising now then next year I’ll be even better.”

The Musician of the Year Award continues to inspire pupils to explore their musical passions, celebrate individuality and share the joy of performing — and if this year is anything to go by, the future of music at Banwell is very bright indeed.

Banwell Primary School is part of the Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN), a group of North Somerset primary schools, nurseries and preschools located in Banwell, Bournville, Locking, Oldmixon, Mead Vale, Mendip Green, Milton Park, Walliscote and Windwhistle.
