Brilliant Ted, 16, Lands Top International Scholarship in Hangzhou, China

By Education Correspondent
Congratulations to Ted Thomas, 16, from Clevedon School in North Somerset, who has been awarded a fully funded scholarship to study A-Levels at Wycombe Abbey International School in Hangzhou, China, beginning in September 2025.
Wycombe Abbey, which operates three schools in China, ran several rounds of rigorous interviews and assessments to select candidates for this prestigious programme.
Ted was one of just five students chosen for a place at the Hangzhou campus, ahead of dozens who took part in the online interviews.
While in China, Ted will study alongside both local and international students, following a bilingual, integrated British curriculum enriched with a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities.
The experience promises to be transformative, offering Ted the chance to fully immerse himself in Chinese culture and education.
This is a remarkable achievement, and Clevedon School hopes Ted will stay connected by joining some of the school’s Mandarin lessons via video link to share updates on his journey.
A special thank you goes to Miss Cordwell, Clevedon School’s inspirational Mandarin teacher, who has supported Ted throughout his time at the school.
Now in its third year, the Wycombe Abbey International China Scholarship has already helped students access leading global universities, including Oxbridge and members of the Russell Group. More than 60% of previous scholars have come from UK schools offering Chinese as a modern foreign language.
Emma said: “Well done to Ted – this is such a unique programme and a world-changing opportunity for him. Everyone is thrilled.”
Head of School Sam Kent said: “This is just wonderful news and we are very proud of Ted on this incredible scheme.
“Our first cohort of scholars have already received offers from prestigious universities like Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities, underlining the strength and impact of this programme.”
