Bristol’s evening and night-time economy has once again been recognised with the city retaining its Purple Flag status for a 16th consecutive year.

The accreditation, which is awarded to towns and cities that offer a safe, vibrant and well-managed night-time experience between 5pm and 5am, is often described as the evening equivalent of the Blue Flag scheme for beaches.

City leaders say the latest award reflects the continued strength of Bristol’s night-time economy and the work taking place to keep the city centre welcoming, safe and active after dark.

Councillor Tony Dyer, Leader of Bristol City Council, said the renewal underlined Bristol’s reputation as a leading destination for nightlife, adding that the city’s evening economy plays an important cultural, social and economic role.

He said the council and its partners remained committed to ensuring the city centre is inclusive and enjoyable for residents and visitors into the evening.

This year’s assessment highlighted strong partnership working across the city, including collaboration between Business Improvement Districts, Avon and Somerset Police, Night Watch and Bristol Waste Company.

Inspectors pointed to a coordinated approach that has helped strengthen safety and civic pride in the city centre after dark.

Projects such as the Shredenhams indoor skate park and the Bristol Light Festival were also noted as positive examples of activity contributing to the city’s night-time offer.

The Light Festival in particular has grown into a major event, attracting large audiences and generating significant economic impact for the city.

Louisa Briggs, project manager at Bristol BID, said the continued accreditation reflected years of joint working between businesses, public services and community organisations to improve the experience of the city centre in the evening and at night.

Bristol is one of around 90 Purple Flag destinations worldwide, alongside locations across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Malta, New Zealand and Australia.
