The British Heart Foundation teamed up with social media star, Matt Green, to encourage staff and students to learn the lifesaving skill of CPR through their Classroom RevivR tool.

East Barnet School in London was treated to a visit from the famous TikTok science teacher who raps to educate and entertain children. He boasts over 100 million views on his videos.

CPR training in schools

Matt has helped us to highlight the importance of school CPR training during Heart Month and showcase our simple CPR tool, Classroom RevivR.

It requires no specialist equipment – just a digital device such as a phone and something to compress on, like a cushion or bag. The lifesaving tool is PSHE Quality Mark accredited and designed to help staff make it easy to teach lifesaving skills.

Supported by Royal Mail, Classroom RevivR is completely free and allows anyone working at a school to register and lead the session.

Despite CPR being mandatory on the curriculum in schools across the UK, not all schools are teaching it.  Two-thirds of teachers in a survey by Schoolzone, commissioned by the BHF, said a lack of trained staff was a barrier to teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and a third said lack of equipment was an issue. 20% of teachers surveyed didn’t even know it was mandatory.

Why is it important?

Lizzie Moscardini, RevivR Programme Manager at the BHF said: “There are more than 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year but fewer than one in ten people survive. With early CPR and defibrillation, the chances of survival can more than double.
“This is why it’s so important we teach our young people how to do CPR so that if they ever find themselves in such a situation, they feel empowered to know what to do and how to help. It is vital to teach the next generation how to perform this lifesaving skill.”

That’s a rap

On 10th February, TikTok teacher Matt Green performed his Heart Month rap about CPR, written specifically for the visit, to the school’s pupils before taking part in the CPR session alongside students and teachers.

On his visit to East Barnet School, the TikTok star said: “It was such a pleasure helping to educate the students about CPR. Knowing that 22 more young people have now learnt this incredibly important skill is really satisfying. They took to it so well and I hope they had fun in the process!

Thank you from the BHF

Lizzie Moscardini from the BHF continued: “It’s been fantastic to see and hear the response from the East Barnet School students. We’re so glad that so many students and teachers got involved with Classroom RevivR and are now trained in CPR – the more young people who have this lifesaving skill, the better.
“We’re so grateful to Matt for using his talent and skill to engage pupils and us support in helping us train a nation of lifesavers through RevivR.”
