HC-One’s Fairway View Care Home in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, has been making dreams come true for its residents, with one remarkable story capturing hearts this month.

For 88-year-old resident Mabel Cooper, sewing has been a lifelong passion. She first began making clothes in 1951 at just 14 years old, when her father bought her a sewing machine.

He would even give her clothing orders which he later sold in Ilkeston.

By the age of 16, Mabel had progressed to creating exquisite wedding dresses – a craft she continued throughout her life, bringing joy to countless brides with her handmade gowns.

Sadly, when Mabel moved house later in life, she was unable to bring her sewing machine with her.

That changed recently when Fairway View’s Lifestyle Manager, Heidi Duffy, surprised Mabel by bringing in an old sewing machine for her to use once again.

Mabel Cooper, HC-One’s Fairway View Care Home resident, said:

“Now my life is complete, I can make myself some clothes again.”

Heidi Duffy, HC-One’s Fairway View Lifestyle Manager, shared:

“I was so happy to help make Mabel’s dream come true. She lit up when I brought the sewing machine in – she couldn’t wait to get her hands on it. There’s no stopping her now!”

Fairway View is just one of over 280 kind and cosy HC-One homes across the UK and new residents can experience 4 weeks for the price of 3 when they join before November 31, 2025.
