Channel 4’s How To Be My Ally Celebrated for Raising Disability Awareness
By Ellise Hollie Hayward, Disabilities Correspondent
The How To Be My Ally series for Channel 4 was all about raising awareness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, learning difficulties and Cerebral Palsy.
I’m so proud to have been part of the documentary on Cerebral Palsy, where I was able to share my own story and experiences of living with the condition.
These kinds of documentaries mean so much.
They help people understand what life can really be like for those of us living with disabilities, the challenges we face each day, and the strength it takes to overcome them. Raising awareness and building understanding is important for true inclusion and acceptance.

The response to the series has been truly overwhelming and positive. I’ve personally received so much wonderful feedback, especially from schools that have shared the documentaries with their students.
Knowing that young people are gaining a better understanding and awareness through these documentaries means so much to me — it’s exactly why projects like this are so important.
The How To Be My Ally series has been honoured with several incredible awards. In 2024, we received a Bronze Award at the Media Week Awards, which was such an exciting achievement. In 2025, we were proud to win two Lovie Awards: a Bronze Lovie in the Branded Entertainment category for Diversity and Inclusion, and the People’s Lovie Award.

These awards are a celebration of everyone involved and a reminder of how powerful our stories and experiences can be in raising awareness and promoting inclusion.
I’ll forever be grateful for the wonderful opportunity to share my personal experiences and to have worked with such an amazing crew and team.
