Aston University in Birmingham is partnering with dementia care provider Lee Mount Healthcare to create the first ‘Smart Care Home’ system incorporating artificial intelligence.

Lee Mount Healthcare (LMH) has partnered with Aston University on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop a smart care system. The project uses machine learning to automate routine tasks and compliance reporting, freeing up staff to spend more time with residents.

The intelligent system will draw on health data, care needs, and personal preferences to create individualised care plansand keep families updated in real time.

With nearly 17,000 care homes in the UK caring for around 500,000 residents, and over half of providers still relying on paper-based systems, the need for digitisation is growing rapidly.

“This KTP builds on years of progress toward digitisation,” said Manjinder Boo Dhiman, director of LMH. “We hope our step into AI helps improve the image of the care sector and attract top talent.”

The project is supported by the Aston Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Application (ACAIRA), recognised internationally for AI research.

Dr Roberto Alamino, lecturer in Applied AI, noted: “It’s essential to bridge the gap between research and real-world care challenges.”

Funded by Innovate UK, the KTP aims to deliver practical, AI-driven solutions to some of the sector’s most pressing needs.
