Sports day isn't just for children – as residents, families and staff at a Derby nursing home proved with a day of races, games and plenty of laughter.

People aged from five to 95 took part in the fun at Brookfields Private Nursing Home on Burton Road, with five generations of one family joining in together.

The event included traditional favourites such as the egg and spoon race and sack race, alongside tin can alley, tug of war and a rather more unusual challenge involving “big pants”.

There was even a chance for residents and families to take aim at staff with wet sponges.

For Joyce, a Brookfields resident, the day was made even more special by having her daughter Rosie and four generations of her family there to enjoy it with her.

Rosie said the event was particularly welcoming because children of all ages and residents' relatives were encouraged to get involved.

The annual sports day also raised money for the British Heart Foundation, a cause particularly close to the Brookfields community.

The fun began with a visit from an ice cream van before everyone headed onto the nursing home's front lawn for the main event.

High Wycombe WWII veteran Ken Pusey has celebrated his 100th birthday after a wartime escape from a deadly V2 rocket attack in Antwerp.

Brookfields owner Celeste Turner said the day was about showing that people can enjoy games and activities at any age, while giving families the opportunity to spend quality time together.

The nursing home has been providing residential care since the 1960s and runs a packed programme of activities throughout the year, including quizzes, crafts, baking and games.

And with competitors ranging from five to 95, this year's sports day certainly proved that you're never too young – or too old – to join in the fun.
