Hope Spring Completes First Borehole Project in Northern Nigeria

A UK charity tackling water poverty has completed its first clean water project of 2026 — and its first ever initiative in northern Nigeria.
Hope Spring Water, based in Hereford, confirmed that a new borehole has been successfully installed in the community of Akwanga.
In a blog post on the charity’s website, spokesperson Bolu Olorunfemi announced the milestone.
“We are pleased to announce the completion of the Akwanga project. The community is delighted to have their very own clean water on tap for the very first time in their history.”
For many residents, access to safe drinking water has long been a daily challenge, often involving long walks to distant sources or reliance on untreated water that carries health risks.
The new borehole now provides a reliable and safer supply of water for the community, helping to improve daily life and reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses.
Hope Spring Water has worked with water-poor communities in West Africa for more than a decade, supporting projects such as borehole drilling, repairing broken water systems and helping communities manage their own water supplies.
The charity is funded entirely through donations, including its online platform Hope Spring eCards, which allows supporters to send digital greeting cards for birthdays and seasonal occasions while helping raise money for water projects.
According to the organisation, the Akwanga project is particularly significant because it marks its first clean water initiative in northern Nigeria, expanding its work to reach more underserved communities.
Local residents and community leaders were involved in planning the project and identifying the best location for the borehole, helping ensure the system can be maintained and used for years to come.
Hope Spring Water says the successful project is just the beginning, with plans to deliver more clean water schemes during 2026 to support communities where safe water remains out of reach.
