Leicester Emergency Doctor Honoured by University for Global Voluntary Healthcare Work

Leicester emergency medicine consultant Dr Ffion Davies has been recognised by the University of Leicester with an honorary doctorate for her voluntary work improving patient care around the world.
Dr Davies, who graduated in Medicine from the University of Leicester in 1990, received an Honorary Doctorate of Science at a graduation ceremony held at De Montfort Hall on Friday, 17 July.
Alongside her roles as an Honorary Consultant Emergency Physician at University Hospitals of Leicester and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester, Dr Davies has spent decades volunteering to improve emergency healthcare internationally.
Her work has included developing medical education, strengthening emergency care systems in under-resourced countries and supporting healthcare professionals through training and professional development.
Dr Davies said: "I am deeply honoured to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Leicester. As a proud Leicester alumna and as a medical consultant at University Hospitals of Leicester, this recognition is particularly meaningful to me.
"Alongside my clinical practice as an emergency doctor, the voluntary work for which I am being recognised is motivated by a desire to improve patient care and support the development of medical practice worldwide. I am enormously grateful to be awarded this honour."
In the NHS, Dr Davies has played a leading role in improving emergency care for children, helping to develop national standards and specialist paediatric emergency services across the UK.
Internationally, Dr Davies served as President of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM) from 2022 to 2024, helping strengthen emergency care in lower-resourced countries through international partnerships and education.

She received a Royal College of Emergency Medicine medal in 2025 for her contribution to emergency care.
Dr Davies has also led numerous medical education projects throughout her career and is the lead author of the textbook Emergency Care of Minor Trauma in Children and the educational website spottingthesickchild.com.
Presenting the award, University of Leicester President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Nishan Canagarajah said: "It was particularly gratifying to see one of our very own alumna walk across the stage once more at a graduation, to receive this well-earned award.
"Dr Davies's work – as a medical professional, a lecturer and a volunteer – has benefited the lives of countless patients, both here and around the globe.
"Her impact cannot be underestimated, and it's wonderful to think the University of Leicester was the springboard to a truly outstanding career."
