Living with Cerebral Palsy: Abbie’s Story of Strength and Independence

Living with Cerebral Palsy: Abbie’s Story of Strength and Independence
Abbie

By Ellise Hollie Hayward, Disabilities Correspondent

Abbie is 28 years old and lives with cerebral palsy.

She lives with her family and uses both manual and electric wheelchairs, as well as a walker, which she often uses around the house. These mobility aids support her daily life and allow her to remain active and engaged.

Abbie enjoys going to the gym, spending time with her family and her boyfriend, and taking part in a variety of online activities.

She values staying busy and finds enjoyment in keeping her mind active and connected.

Cerebral palsy affects Abbie’s life every day, making routine an essential part of her wellbeing. Structure helps keep her motivated, and she thrives when her days follow a familiar pattern that gives her a sense of control and purpose.

One of the biggest challenges Abbie faces is independence.

As she gets older, her desire to move forward in life and become more independent continues to grow. However, disability-related barriers and everyday challenges can sometimes limit her opportunities and slow that progress.

Abbie hopes to share an important message with the wider world: people with disabilities are not strange or different in a negative way.

They are simply people who live their lives differently and deserve understanding, inclusion, and respect.
