A convoy of 68 traditional London black cabs will take to the capital's streets next week as volunteer taxi drivers give dozens of children a day out at Hertfordshire Zoo.

The annual outing, organised by the London Taxi Drivers' Charity for Children, will take place on Wednesday, 8 July, with children aged between four and 11 travelling from Asda on the Isle of Dogs to the zoo in a colourful procession through London.

The charity supports children from a range of backgrounds, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and families facing financial hardship.

Every taxi taking part is driven by a volunteer cabbie, who gives up a day's work to take part.

Many of the black cabs will be decorated for the journey, with drivers competing for the charity's annual Best-Dressed Taxi award.

Once at Hertfordshire Zoo, the children, along with their families, carers, teachers and volunteer drivers, will enjoy a full day of activities, including lunch, refreshments, mini-golf and rides on the zoo's railway, all provided by the charity.

The London Taxi Drivers' Charity for Children has been organising outings for young people for almost 100 years, relying on volunteer drivers and fundraising to create memorable experiences for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

Paramedic Retires After Saving Woman’s Life | London News
A London paramedic retiring after 39 years was reunited with the woman whose life he saved after she suffered a cardiac arrest.

Claire Zazzara, the charity's PR and Social Media Officer, said:

"There is nothing quite like seeing dozens of traditional London cabs coming together to bring joy to these incredible children. Our drivers give up their own time because they want to make a difference, and seeing the smiles on the children's faces makes every mile worthwhile."

The convoy is due to leave Asda on the Isle of Dogs at around 9.30am before arriving at Hertfordshire Zoo at approximately 11am. It will return to London later that afternoon.
