Pupils from Mary Elton Primary School in Clevedon, Somerset made their mark as they took part in their first ever chess tournament.

Four pupils represented the school at the inaugural Children’s Chess League, held at the Bristol Bridge Club.

The tournament brought together 65 children aged five to 11 from schools and local clubs across the area.

Hundreds of games were played throughout the day, creating a lively and buzzing atmosphere.

UK Spring Clock Change Brings Longer, Brighter Evenings
Clocks go forward on 29 March 2026, marking the start of BST and giving the UK longer, lighter evenings to enjoy spring and summer activities.

For three of the four Mary Elton players, it was their first competitive tournament — making their efforts all the more impressive. Each pupil played 12 games over five hours, showing focus, determination and excellent sportsmanship.

All participants received medals and certificates to celebrate their achievements, with the Mary Elton pupils praised for their commitment and positive attitude throughout the event.

Teacher Cheryl Brown said:

“We are incredibly proud of the pupils for taking part in their first tournament. They showed great resilience, focus and sportsmanship, and represented the school brilliantly.”
