Mnjiri Community Day Secondary School Supports Free Schools Policy

Mnjiri Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) has embraced the government’s Free Schools Policy, which came into effect this January.

Speaking on the policy, Deputy Headteacher M. Kumwenda said that while the initiative is positive, discipline among learners will be essential. “Usually, when education is free, students do not become serious, so the government will have to be strict,” he said.

Kumwenda also spoke about school funding, explaining that previous support had been limited.

“The previous government, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), was unable to fund the school adequately. Usually, we are given K2,000,000 each year, and rice and water were provided by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is currently in government,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he described the policy as a positive step for the country.

“It is a good move. Everyone will be accommodated, whether poor or rich,” Kumwenda added.

Teacher E. Mtonga also welcomed the policy, saying it would promote equality among students.

“It will bring equality to the students. Fees were catering for many school needs, but now we will have to wait for the government to fund,” he said.

Mtonga urged learners to take the opportunity seriously.

“If the government has taken this initiative, students should take it as a relief and not as liberty. They should work hard so that parents can save or invest in their children’s education,” he added.

Student leaders at the school also shared their views on the policy.

The Student Council President and Vice President said that while some learners may become industrious because fees are no longer paid, others may become less committed, which could affect performance.
