North Somerset MP Sadik Al-Hassan Visits Mary Elton Primary School

Pupils at Mary Elton Primary School welcomed their local North Somerset MP, Sadik Al‑Hassan of the Labour Party for an inspiring visit. 

Mr Al‑Hassan toured the school with Headteacher Tom Newell and, Futura Education Director, Tamara Dexter, meeting pupils and staff and seeing learning in action.

He also met with the school council, listening to their views and discussing issues that matter to young people. 

He took time to congratulate Year 6 pupils on completing their recent SATs, praising their hard work and wishing them success as they move on to secondary school. 

Year 5 pupils stepped into the role of journalists, leading a lively question and answer session. They impressed with their confidence and curiosity, asking about leadership, decision-making and life as an MP.

Speaking about local priorities, Mr Al‑Hassan highlighted biodiversity and housing. He explained that making decisions can be challenging when opinions differ and stressed the importance of listening to everyone fairly.

He also spoke about leadership, saying that good leaders listen, understand others and set a clear vision.

He shared that one of his proudest moments has been being selected as chair of a pharmacy group.

Explaining how he stays connected to the community, Mr Al‑Hassan described holding regular surgeries, visiting schools and meeting residents, noting that he has helped over 16,500 people in his role.

He encouraged pupils to make a difference in their community by choosing an issue they care about, working together and taking action and ended the visit with a powerful message:

“As an MP my job is to listen to you. If you have an issue please write and tell me and I will write back. Your voice is important to shape the future. Politics is for you.” 

Pupils were praised for representing Mary Elton Primary School with confidence, respect and thoughtful questioning throughout the visit.
