Norwich City Community Sports Foundation is introducing a new Young Carers Club at The Nest to support children aged 8–12 who provide regular care for someone at home.

The programme starts on 26th February and will take place on Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Two groups of 20 children will attend on alternating weeks.

The initiative is run in partnership with The Benjamin Foundation and funded by the Family Hubs Fund at Norfolk County Council.

Young carers are children who regularly assist family members with physical or mental health conditions, disabilities, or addiction. Their daily responsibilities may include helping with personal care, managing medicines, shopping, cleaning, or handling household finances.

The Young Carers Club aims to give participants a safe and welcoming space to enjoy time for themselves, make friends, and take part in fun activities.

Sessions will include football, padel, table tennis, darts, pool, and board games, as well as personal development exercises to enhance teamwork, communication, leadership, and resilience.

All activities will be led by trained coaches, ensuring a supportive environment where young carers can relax and be active.

Jackie Thornton, Director of Strategy & Development at the Community Sports Foundation, said:

“We are thrilled to work with The Benjamin Foundation and Norfolk County Council to support young carers across Norfolk.
This programme gives children a chance to have fun and form new friendships in a safe, friendly space — something particularly valuable given the responsibilities they carry. We are excited to get started and make a positive impact on the lives of young carers in the community.”

The programme is free to attend, and families can register their interest via the foundation’s website.
