Pasties with a Purpose: Cornish Classic Finds a Home in Revived Seaside Town Shop

By Jill Dando News
North Somerset Council has signed an agreement with Warrens Bakery to lease a shop on the High Street in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset.
The shop, which will be the Cornwall-based retailer’s 44th store, is due to open next month (June 2025).
57 High Street is one of several shops on Weston’s High Street to have been recently renovated and restored, ready to be brought back into use.
The council’s appointed contractor for the project, Bray & Slaughter, carried out work on the unit including removing the previous shopfront, signage and roller shutter door, and replacing it with a more traditional shopfront.
Energy efficiency improvements were installed to help the new occupiers offset premises costs, and in-line with the council’s commitment to tackle the climate emergency.
This project is part of North Somerset Council’s ambitious placemaking vision for the town, made possible thanks to its successful bid for £20m from the UK government.
Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council's executive member responsible for placemaking, said: “Not only has our project made a significant positive difference to the building’s physical appearance but it’s extremely encouraging to see that the work has attracted a new business to operate in the town. This will help boost footfall and trade, and create jobs for local people. It’s excellent news all round! This proves that when landlords invest in their retail properties there is a very positive outcome.
“Wishing a warm Weston welcome to Warrens Bakery. I’m sure local people and visitors alike will enjoy this new addition and food offering on our High Street. We wish them every success.
“Business owners interested in the other units that we’re restoring – 67-69 and 73 High Street – should contact Carter Jonas, the estate agent marketing these properties on the council’s behalf.”
Craig Wood, Assistant Retail Director of Warren’s Bakery, added: “We’ve come a long way since our first ever family bakery in St Just. We’re excited and proud to be opening a new store in a prime position in the heart of popular Weston-super-Mare, serving customers a taste of Cornwall with our renowned pasties and a host of other delicious fresh produce”.
The new Warrens Bakery store is set to create between five to ten new jobs due to part-time roles.
