Paw-werful Surge: Jack Russell Terriers Enjoy Royal Rise in Popularity in 2025

By Jill Dando News
It’s a tail-wagging start to the year for one of Britain’s most iconic breeds.
According to new data released by The Kennel Club, the Jack Russell Terrier — famously beloved by Queen Camilla — has seen a majestic 75% rise in puppy registrations in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
The small but spirited breed, long associated with British countryside charm and royal companionship, appears to be enjoying its own version of the "Corgi effect" — a phenomenon first popularised by the late Queen Elizabeth II’s devotion to her Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
While the Jack Russell has been quietly gaining popularity over the years — with a 14% rise between 2021 and 2022, coinciding with King Charles III’s ascension to the throne — its royal status was further cemented earlier this year when Queen Camilla welcomed a new pup, Moley, to join her longtime companion Bluebell, adopted in 2011.
A Spaniel Success Story Too
The Jack Russell isn't the only breed basking in royal favour. The Cocker Spaniel, a mainstay of British dog ownership, continues its upward trend as the second most popular breed in the UK, according to The Kennel Club’s 2024 and early 2025 data.
With its charming personality and affectionate nature, the breed has captured the hearts of the public and the palace alike.
Royal dog fans may already be familiar with Orla, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Cocker Spaniel, who reportedly became a new mum this year to four Cocker Spaniel puppies, further adding to the breed’s visibility and appeal.
Historically rooted in British culture, the Cocker Spaniel held the crown as the nation’s top dog from 1935 to 1953, and has consistently remained in the top ten breeds for over a century.
After reclaiming second place in 2024, it’s now closing in on the reigning favourite: the Labrador Retriever.
Royals and the Rise of British Breeds
The influence of royal dog ownership continues to shape canine trends across the UK. As pet owners look for loyal companions with charm and character, breeds like the Jack Russell and Cocker Spaniel offer both heritage and heart.
Charlotte McNamara, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, explained:
“The Jack Russell Terrier and the Cocker Spaniel are iconic British breeds, and make wonderful companions, so it’s no wonder they have the royal seal of approval. Both breeds have friendly and lively personalities, making them well-suited to the busy and active lives of royalty where they are certain to meet lots of new people.”
McNamara also stressed the importance of responsible ownership:
“It’s vital that any would-be owner does their research to find the dog that best fits their lifestyle and can meet the breed’s unique needs. We’re lucky in the UK to have such a wide variety of breeds, each offering something special.”
Thinking About a Four-Legged Friend?
With 224 pedigree dog breeds recognised by The Kennel Club, there’s a pup to suit every personality and pace of life. From energetic terriers to affectionate spaniels, potential owners are encouraged to explore their options carefully before bringing home a furry family member.
