Shaldon Wildlife Trust is celebrating a landmark achievement after being officially accredited by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

This recognition places the Devon-based zoo among a select group of highly regarded zoos and aquariums across Europe and Western Asia.

Accreditation confirms that the Trust meets demanding international benchmarks in animal welfare, conservation, and scientific research. Notably, Shaldon is the smallest organisation within EAZA’s accredited membership.

The Trust is also among the first to complete EAZA’s newly introduced five-year accreditation cycle. This involved an in-depth assessment carried out by a team of international specialists, who reviewed all aspects of the zoo’s operations—from enclosure design and veterinary provision to safety procedures and education programmes.

EAZA’s requirements go beyond standard national licensing, setting a higher bar for institutions working in conservation and animal care.

“This is a very proud moment for our team, especially as the smallest EAZA member” said Zak Showell, Director of Shaldon Wildlife Trust.
“Being EAZA accredited is the gold standard in our industry. It tells our visitors and partners that every animal in our care is receiving world-class husbandry, and that our conservation work—right here in Shaldon—is making a measurable difference to global biodiversity.”

Despite its modest size, the Trust continues to play an active role in international conservation efforts, contributing to breeding programmes and supporting species protection projects both locally and overseas.

The recognition comes at an important moment for global conservation. Visitors are encouraged to experience firsthand the standards of care and commitment that have earned Shaldon Wildlife Trust its place among Europe’s leading zoological institutions.
