Toilet Champion Joins Loo of the Year Awards to Boost Standards Nationwide

The Loo of the Year Awards has announced a major new addition to its team, welcoming industry leader Carl Smith to help drive forward its mission to improve the quality and accessibility of public washrooms across the UK and Ireland.
Carl Smith, a well-known advocate for inclusive toilet provision, brings a wealth of experience from leading the government’s £35 million Changing Places Toilet installation programme in partnership with Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Based in Lincolnshire, Carl has played a pivotal role in delivering hundreds of life-changing accessible toilet installations in key locations, including motorway services and major rail stations.
Now working alongside managing directors Becky and Charles Wall, Carl’s new role will focus on increasing participation in the annual Loo of the Year Awards grading scheme and raising awareness of the importance of clean, accessible, and well-maintained washrooms.
“Toilets reflect your business,” said Carl. “If no one cares about the state of your washrooms, do they really care about the rest of your operation? Loo of the Year’s independent assessments are not just nice-to-haves—they can have a serious impact on customer confidence and experience.”
The Loo of the Year Awards, which in 2024 saw over 1,500 venues assessed, celebrate excellence in washroom provision across sectors including hospitality, retail, healthcare, and transport.
From pubs and garden centres to hospitals and motorway service stations, the awards recognise facilities that go above and beyond in hygiene, safety, and accessibility.
Becky Wall BEM, co-director of the awards, welcomed Carl’s appointment, stating: “Carl’s passion and credibility in this sector is evident. His ability to engage local authorities, businesses, and stakeholders will be a real asset in helping us expand our reach and impact.”
Carl’s involvement marks a pivotal moment for the Loo of the Year Awards as it continues to champion better public toilet standards and provide organisations with a structured, cost-effective path to showcase excellence in washroom management.
