Two French dog breeds are officially joining Britain’s pedigree family

Two French dog breeds with long and rather interesting histories are set to become the latest additions to Britain’s recognised pedigree dog community.
The Braque du Bourbonnais and Epagneul Français will be officially recognised by the Royal Kennel Club from 1 October, taking the total number of recognised breeds to 230.
Both are old breeds that were originally developed as hunting dogs, but both have also had to overcome periods when their numbers fell sharply.
The Braque du Bourbonnais comes from the Bourbonnais region of France and dates back to at least the 16th century.
It was once a popular hunting companion but declined after the First World War. Dedicated breeders later brought the breed back, and it is now found in countries around the world as both a working dog and family companion.
The Epagneul Français has an even longer history, with records dating back to the 14th century.
It was traditionally used to hunt and retrieve game and became known for being intelligent, versatile and gentle.
Its numbers also declined during the early 20th century before the breed was successfully revived.
From October, both breeds will be part of the Gundog Group in the UK and will initially be registered on the Royal Kennel Club’s Imported Breed Register.

There is a little wait before owners can take them into the show ring, however. Interim breed standards must first be published before the dogs can compete at Royal Kennel Club licensed breed shows.
The two French breeds are the latest additions to a growing list of recognised breeds. The Yakutian Laika, Miniature American Shepherd and Silken Windhound were also recognised earlier this year.
For the Braque du Bourbonnais and Epagneul Français, their arrival in the UK marks another chapter in the story of two breeds that have survived difficult times and are now finding a new generation of admirers.
