UK Men’s Sheds Association Launches Free Guide to Creating Men’s Sheds in Shipping Containers
By Mental Health Correspondent
The UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) has published a new free guide designed to support communities across the UK in setting up Men’s Sheds within shipping containers — a practical, affordable and increasingly popular way to create safe workshop and social spaces for men.
Men’s Sheds make an important contribution to reducing loneliness and social isolation, particularly among older men and those facing major life changes such as retirement, bereavement or long-term health challenges.

By offering shared spaces where men can meet, learn new skills and build supportive friendships, Sheds play a positive role in improving mental wellbeing, supporting suicide prevention efforts, encouraging healthier lifestyles and strengthening local communities.
With suitable community premises often difficult to secure, the new publication, Shipping Container Set Up for Sheds, is based on hands-on experience from established container-based Sheds.
It includes practical case studies from Amersham Men’s Shed and Wendover Men’s Shed. As of December 2025, at least 27 Men’s Sheds across the UK are operating primarily from converted shipping containers.
John Latchford of Amersham Men’s Shed in Buckinghamshire said the project offered more than just a solution to space limitations:
“The container didn’t just address our lack of premises — it became a shared project for members. Refurbishing it together gave us purpose, teamwork and a real sense of achievement. The finished workshop reflects not only a physical space, but the skills and confidence developed along the way.”
Shipping containers provide a fast and cost-effective starting point, especially in areas where permanent buildings are unavailable or unaffordable. They are secure, durable, weather-resistant and portable, and can be adapted for workshops, social areas, storage and even off-grid use.
The guide takes readers through every stage of the process, including:
- Planning, site access and foundations
- Power supply, lighting and ventilation
- Health and safety, insurance and regulatory requirements
- Workshop layout and planning for future growth
- Insulation, noise reduction and dust control
- Real-life case studies and lessons learned
It also explores how container-based Sheds can expand over time, featuring examples of modular extensions, covered outdoor workspaces and renewable energy options.
By sharing practical guidance and honest insights from experienced Shedders, UKMSA hopes to lower barriers for communities seeking to create welcoming spaces that promote men’s health, wellbeing and social connection.
Rachel Meadows, Head of Development at the UK Men’s Sheds Association, said:
“Shipping containers have helped many Sheds get established quickly and safely, often where no other premises were available. This guide brings together the shared knowledge of those who’ve already been through the process, helping others avoid common challenges and make informed choices.”
Shipping Container Set Up for Sheds is intended for community groups, local authorities, funders and anyone interested in developing a Men’s Shed.
The guide is available now via the UKMSA website, along with further information on starting a Men’s Shed.
