Victorian WOW Day Brings History to Life for Year 5 pupils
By Schools Correspondent
Year 5 pupils at Mary Elton Primary School in Clevedon, Somerset stepped back in time as they launched their new history topic with a fully immersive Victorian WOW Day.
Dressed in impressive period costumes, the children looked the part as they experienced a taste of life in the 19th century.
The morning saw pupils discovering the harsh realities of Victorian punishments and taking part in traditional school lessons.
Children practised writing on slates and used pen and ink, just as Victorian youngsters once did. They also explored domestic life, shining shoes, polishing cutlery and tackling the tough task of washing clothes without modern machines.

In the afternoon, spirits were high as pupils enjoyed classic Victorian games such as pick-up sticks, Jacob’s ladder, quoits and even stilts.
The day ended on a high note with a rousing rendition of the national anthem.
Headteacher Tom Newell said:
“It was a brilliant day and a fantastic start to the history topic. A massive thank you to the HSA for their generous support in making the day possible, as well as Alan and Irene from Victorianschool.co.uk for delivering such an engaging and memorable experience.”
