Wally on the Run! Marathon Mission Meets World Record Chase
By Charities Correspondent
Crowds at the London Marathon may need sharper eyes this year as one runner turns the race into a real-life puzzle.
George Anthony will be racing dressed as Where’s Wally, hoping spectators can spot him among thousands of participants while he raises money for The Salvation Army.
Alongside fundraising, the 25-year-old from Monmouth is aiming high—he’s attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run in a cartoon costume.
The current benchmark stands at 2:46:40, set by Edward Ditmyer, who completed the Detroit Marathon dressed as Charlie Brown.

George said:
“I’ve run marathons before and noticed that runners in costume often inspire people to donate. I wanted to stand out and make this challenge meaningful. Going for a world record adds a personal test for me and hopefully encourages people to support the fundraising.”
His passion for running began at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, where he competed in cross-country events. After completing the Salzburg Marathon in just over 2 hours 54 minutes last year, he’s now within striking distance of the record.
The funds raised will support The Salvation Army’s Young People’s Homelessness Services in Cardiff—a cause close to home.
His mother, Sally, has worked there for three decades, giving him a direct view of the difference the service makes.
Sally said:
“The money George raises will support our work with young people experiencing homelessness in Cardiff who have faced trauma and adversity. We help them rebuild confidence and move forward positively. Knowing he’s helping others will spur him on. Good luck, George.”
This year’s London Marathon takes place on 26 April, with the 26.2-mile course running from Greenwich to near Buckingham Palace.
