Children are trained by professional journalists and some as young as 9 have interviewed a Prime Minister three times, Mr Speaker four times and countless others.

All young reporters in schools become part of the Jill Dando News team which have bases in the UK and Malawi, Africa. There are plans to take Good News Rooms all over the world.

Our Journey So Far

Every student becomes part of the Jill Dando News Network, with Good News Rooms already operating across the UK and Malawi, Africa — and plans to expand worldwide.

The movement began in 2011 when an award-winning journalist, through The Purple Sheep PR organisation, launched the very first Good News Room inside the headteacher’s office at Priory School in Weston-super-Mare.

Backed from the start by journalists, editors and media leaders, the mission was simple but powerful: train young people to focus on positive journalism, inspiring stories and real-life hope.

Soon afterwards, Sir Richard Branson sent a special video message encouraging the school’s 1,250 students — helping spark what would become a growing movement.

In 2016, The Good News Post was launched to share children’s uplifting stories with the wider world. That same year, Jill Dando News was launched at Jill Dando’s former school, Worle School, inspired by Jill’s kindness, positivity and journalistic brilliance.

Today, students are trained by journalists and media professionals connected to organisations including the BBC, ITV, Sky News, CBS News America and national newspapers.

Young reporters have gone on to interview Prime Ministers, Mr Speaker, NASA astronauts and world leaders, with some children interviewing a Prime Minister as young as nine years old.

Supported by mental health leaders Wendy Griffin and Dawn Carey since 2017, the project always puts young people’s wellbeing first.

To help expand the movement across the UK and internationally, The Purple Sheep later created Good News Post Ltd, which now runs and develops the Good News Post, Good News Rooms and the Jill Dando News Network.
