Year 6 Pupils Shine in Glass Workshop Ahead of Festival

By Schools Correspondent

Year 6 pupils at Mary Elton Primary School took part in an engaging glassmaking workshop last week, producing creative pieces set to be displayed at the upcoming Green Shift Festival.

The session began with an introduction to this year’s festival theme, “Threads, Webs and Wonder”, which sparked curiosity and inspired a range of imaginative ideas among the pupils.

During the workshop, students designed and created their own glass pieces, learning techniques such as cutting and layering glass, making ‘frit’ (crushed glass), and carefully assembling their designs.

Their enthusiasm was evident throughout, and the finished pieces are expected to reflect both creativity and skill.

Jacob Thomas said:

“On Tuesday I met Alison and we made a creation from glass. It was really great; I haven't done anything like that before. My favourite part was making ‘frit’ with the hammer (frit is small, crushed glass). I am looking forward to seeing my finished creation at the Green Shift Festival.”

Grace Barker added:

“We met Alison on Tuesday to do a glassmaking workshop. I loved crushing the glass into frit and then sprinkling it onto my design. I also liked using a special glass paint to create my design onto the glass. I really loved cutting the glass as well.”

The experience has left pupils excited to see their work exhibited at the festival.

A special thank you was given to Alison Mower for delivering an inspiring and hands-on workshop.
