At 81 years old, Weston-super-Mare resident Arthur Bosley reckons he knows a good fish and chips when he tastes one — and after decades of enjoying the British favourite, he says the Grand Pier now tops the lot.

Arthur, who has lived in Weston for the past 18 years and spent years around fishing boats as a keen fisherman and hobby angler, said he was “absolutely shocked” by how good the meal was when he recently visited the pier for the first time.

“The fish was lovely and crispy, and the chips were crispy outside but nice and moist inside,” said Arthur. “Delicious. They’re the best fish and chips I’ve had all around Weston.”

Arthur believes the secret comes down to the way they cook them.

“They cook them right,” he said. “They’ve obviously got their own way of doing their batter and their chips.”

He was also impressed by the portion sizes.

“Oh yeah, very good. Very big portions,” he added.

Arthur says fish and chips have long been one of his favourite meals.

“When you think about all the other meals, fish and chips really is one of my favourites,” he said. “Though I do love a good lamb stew as well!”

The Weston great-grandad, has a 13-year-old dog Dylan, said he already knows where he’ll be heading next time he fancies fish and chips.

“Next time we go out for fish and chips, we know where we’re heading,” he smiled.
