Baby Born at 22 Weeks Finally Goes Home After Months in Hospital

A baby believed to be the youngest survivor ever born at University Hospital Coventry has gone home after spending the first months of his life in specialist neonatal care.

Isaac was born in February at just 22 weeks and three days, weighing 555g (1.2lb) – about the same as a large block of butter.

After months of treatment in the hospital's Neonatal and Special Care Baby Units, he has now been discharged to join his family at home, where his two older siblings were waiting to welcome him. He now weighs almost 6lb.

His mother, Vimbay, described the experience as "one of the scariest moments of my life".

"It's been an emotional rollercoaster. We've celebrated every gram he has gained," she said.

"There have been moments of fear and moments of exhaustion, but there have also been moments of hope, and my faith has carried me through this.

"The nursing team and neonatal staff have been amazing. Isaac wouldn't have got to where he is now without them."

According to the hospital, around seven in 10 babies born at 22 weeks do not survive labour or the period immediately after birth.

Tracey Brigstock, Chief Nursing Officer at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, said Isaac's progress reflected "the strength shown by babies, families and staff every day" in neonatal care.

She added: "It is wonderful to know Isaac is now home with his family, and we wish them every happiness for the future."
