Bath Christmas Market given permanent green light

Bath Christmas Market has been given permanent planning permission, securing the future of one of the city’s biggest annual events.

The popular market attracts more than 440,000 visitors and is estimated to bring up to £64m into the local economy each year.

Under the new permission, the market can run for up to 25 days each year and use a larger area of the city.

There are no plans at present for the council to extend the current 18-day market or expand it immediately.

The larger area could, in future, allow for more dining, entertainment, family activities and retail opportunities.

The decision will also give local businesses and traders greater certainty about the market’s future.

Around 65% of traders are from the Bath area, with 85% coming from across the South West.

Visitors also spend money across the city, with 71% spending at shops, cafés, restaurants and attractions. Many stay overnight, providing a boost for hotels and other businesses during the quieter winter months.

The market has been part of Bath’s Christmas celebrations for more than 25 years and was brought in-house by Bath & North East Somerset Council in 2022.

Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for Communications and Community, said:

“Bath Christmas Market is a much-loved tradition that brings people together, supports local businesses and contributes tens of millions of pounds to our local economy.

“This decision secures the future of this hugely popular, internationally recognised event and ensures it can continue to evolve responsibly and sustainably in the years ahead.”
