Deer Rescued After Getting Trapped in Norwich Marks & Spencer Escalator
By Animals Correspondent
A muntjac deer had to be rescued after becoming trapped inside an escalator at a Marks & Spencer store in Norwich city centre.
Staff at the Rampant Horse Street store temporarily closed the entrance while rescuers worked to free the frightened animal, now nicknamed Lucy.
Hillside Animal Sanctuary said the deer became stuck between the escalator and a glass panel on Tuesday evening.
Rescuer Ian Hayward managed to free the animal from the narrow gap before transporting her to the sanctuary with only minor injuries.
Wendy Valentine, founder of Hillside Animal Sanctuary, told the BBC the incident was “certainly one to remember”.

An M&S spokesperson said staff acted quickly to keep the deer calm until help arrived.
Stefanie Leary, operations manager at the sanctuary, told the BBC nobody knows exactly how the muntjac ended up inside the shop.
She said the deer may have become frightened after wandering into the city centre.
Lucy is now recovering at the sanctuary and will remain there permanently because muntjac deer are considered a non-native species in the UK.
